Easy Natural DIY Produce Wash

Posted by Marissa Green on

While you may never think of washing your fruits and veggies, most produce is covered in a waxy coating of shellac or lac-resin which is produced by the lac insect for the sake of a longer shelf life and an appetizing appearance. The FDA recognizes shellac to be generally safe, but washing your produce will help remove most contact pesticide residues that appear on the surface of non-organic fruits and veggies.
A simple and natural DIY produce wash that you can store in a spray bottle and keep under the kitchen sink is:

2 Cups of Water

1/4 Cup of White Vinegar
2 TBSP of Lemon Juice

Simple spray your fruits and veggies, let sit for a few minutes, scrub with a soft brush and rinse thoroughly!

Another method that takes longer but has better results consists of mixing 1 oz of Baking Soda and 100 oz of water and allowing your produce to soak for 12 to 15 minutes.
Whatever your choice, washing your fruits and veggies is beneficial for your optimal health.
